Markets Update:
Asian stocks traded mixed on Monday and gold edged down on a firmer dollar as investors looked ahead to key economic data due this week as well as the release of minutes from the U.S. Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting slated to be released Wednesday for directional cues.
Japan’s Nikkei index was marginally lower as hawkish comments from Fed and ECB officials offset investor optimism over a weakening yen. Chinese blue chips firmed 1.1% as Beijing kept interest rates steady as expected, having already poured liquidity into the banking system in recent days. Australian markets were little changed as gains in financials offset weakness in the energy sector.
Oil prices were trying to rally, after shedding around 4% last week amid signs of ample supply and concerns over future demand.
